Local leaders seek economic solutions after Spreckels plant shutdown
EL CENTRO – Agricultural Commissioner Jolene Dessert reflected on the sugar beet industry’s long connection to the Valley at the Board of Supervisors' regular meeting on Tuesday, May 13, noting that the earliest records of sugar beet production in the agricultural records date back to 1938. She emphasized that the Spreckels plant closure impacts all sectors of the Valley’s economy, from harvesting contractors and truckers to factory workers.
